Mountain Trail Stables

This was our home last night ar Mountain Trail Stables on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail and Sauratown Trail. We are so thankful for the folks who provide such spaces – especially when it is raining.

  1. I read thru your blogs - sounds like a wonderful experience so far. Some good compromises from the original plan.

I plan to start on section 1a and hopefully continue on thru the mountain section this fall. I haven’t really considered much more but your canoeing the rivers has me intrigued. We have a 17’ Old Town canoe that sounds similar to what you have. I’m thinking my wife could join me for this part of the trip. Anyway, any advice on the canoe portions or even biking? And I’m familiar with the MST site and guides - looking for some real world feedback.

    1. We would be happy to share any and all of our experience. We have found the on road hiking to be the least rewarding and have chosen to bike or paddle as many of those sections as possible. We paddled all of Sections 11a-16a, which was enjoyable, although you should know the paddling right before and after New Bern was difficult due to wind and tides. We also paddled part of Section 6, 28 miles on the Yadkin River that would otherwise be on road hiking. Also good if you are comfortable with small class I+ rapids. This weekend and into next week we will bike most of Sections 8 & 9, with short hikes to connect these biking sections. You can email me at jcrezeli(at)gmail(dot)com with specific questions and I will do my best to respond.
